This Code of Conduct is designed to ensure that the Camp Wendake community, including campers, volunteers, camp administration, governance committee members, guests, attendees at our events, and any other participants, remains a respectful, inclusive, and safe space for everyone. It outlines the standards of behavior expected from all participants and provides guidance on how situations that may arise will be handled.
This Code applies to all interactions within our community; whether in person, online, or in any setting where we represent our shared values. By participating, you agree to uphold these principles and contribute to a positive environment for all.
The following core values serve as the foundation for conduct and interaction within the community. These principles define the culture and expectations upheld by all participants:
Respect - All individuals are to be treated with dignity, kindness, and consideration. Active listening, openness to differing perspectives, and empathetic communication are essential. Disagreements should be addressed constructively and without personal attacks.
Integrity - Honesty, transparency, and fairness are expected in all actions and decisions. Individuals are responsible for maintaining ethical standards and building trust through consistent and truthful behavior.
Inclusivity - Diversity in all its forms is valued and embraced. The environment must support the full participation of all individuals, regardless of background, identity, sexuality, socio-economic status, or ability.
Accountability - Each person is responsible for their actions and their impact on others. Openness to feedback and a willingness to address mistakes promptly are essential to maintaining a respectful and responsible community.
Collaboration - Cooperation and mutual support are essential to building a strong and unified community. Sharing knowledge, offering assistance, and working together toward collective success help foster meaningful connections and a positive environment for all.
All participants are expected to demonstrate care and responsibility toward both the natural environment and all physical property belonging to the camp or other participants. This includes:
Preserving the condition of camp facilities, equipment, and personal belongings.
Refraining from any actions that may result in damage or disruption.
Avoiding interference with safety and operational equipment, including fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, vehicles, and waterfront markers.
Promptly reporting any damaged, malfunctioning, or missing equipment to a volunteer or designated authority.
For safety and supervision purposes, all participants must remain on camp property unless they are part of an organized, supervised off-site activity. Unauthorized departure from camp grounds is not permitted.
We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for any form of aggression, including:
Physical assault, verbal abuse, bullying, or intimidation.
Harassment based on race, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, religion, or any other personal characteristic.
Any behavior intended to exert control, dominance, or fear over another individual.
All participants have the right to feel safe and supported. Anyone who witnesses or experiences harmful behavior is strongly encouraged to report the incident to the appropriate authority.
Engaging in physical aggression or other serious misconduct may result in immediate dismissal from camp and, where applicable, referral to law enforcement authorities.
Camp Wendake is a predominantly smoke-free environment. Smoking and vaping are permitted only in designated areas. Designated outdoor smoking areas will be clearly communicated, and participants who choose to smoke must do so only in those areas. Marijuana use is allowed only in a separate area exclusive to this purpose (see Substance Use policy below).
The possession, consumption, or distribution of controlled substances including alcohol, cannabis, or any illegal drugs is strictly prohibited during the camp session, whether on or off camp property. Intoxication or being under the influence of such substances at any time will result in immediate dismissal from camp, and may result in a permanent ban from participation in Camp Wendake.
All medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, must be stored and administered through the camp’s nursing station. This policy ensures the safety and well-being of all participants and supports a healthy, substance-free environment. Camp Wendake provides a safe-space for individuals who use medical marijuana for pain management; however, all recreational use of cannabis products is strictly prohibited.
Camp Wendake is a rustic environment where safety is our top priority. While we welcome families, please note that we do not provide daycare services. Children, including teenagers, must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times and are not permitted to wander the camp or remain in sleeping cabins alone, including at night. Cabin Leaders are tasked with ensuring safety and responding to emergencies; they are not responsible for supervising children and must not be relied upon for childcare under any circumstances.
Our Family Program offers daily activities designed for children and their parents to enjoy together. Participation requires that children be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times, as this is not a drop-off or childcare service. The program is intended to create shared experiences and strengthen family connections within the camp community.
Positive relationships and friendships often develop in camp settings. All interpersonal interactions must be respectful, consensual, and appropriate to the camp environment.
Any form of sexual activity must be discreet, and involve only consenting individuals of legal age. Behavior that is disruptive, non-consensual, or makes others uncomfortable is not acceptable.
Sexual or romantic relationships between campers and volunteers are strictly prohibited. Such relationships represent a conflict of interest and a breach of professional boundaries, and will result in the immediate dismissal of all parties involved.
All participants are expected to follow the guidance and instructions of camp personnel in a position of authority, including lifeguards, nurses, and administrative leaders. These individuals are responsible for ensuring the safety, well-being, and smooth operation of the camp environment.
Directions provided by personnel in a position of authority must be followed promptly and respectfully. This includes:
Adhering to safety protocols and supervision guidelines.
Cooperating during emergency procedures or health-related interventions.
Respecting the roles and responsibilities of those entrusted with leadership and care.
By participating in camp, you agree to follow these standards and to respect the guidance of camp personnel and administrators. Failure to comply with the code of conduct may result in:
Formal warnings
Dismissal from camp
Ineligibility to return in future years
I acknowledge and accept full responsibility for my participation in camp activities. I hereby release and hold harmless Camp Wendake, its volunteers, administration, governance committee, as well as Camp Huron and the Diocese of Huron, from any and all liability for accidents, injuries, or incidents that may occur during my stay at camp.
